The essential elements of landscape are universal: the lay of the land, the light, water, vegetation and interventions of humans, but each landscape configures these in unique and meaningful ways. We are not always aware of the reasons for our affinity towards certain types of landscapes, but most of us have our favorites. I am attracted to places where humans and nature interact, to city parks and rural lands bordering urban congestion, places where humans and animals live together in a sort of unspoken truce. The movement of light over the land, the presence of water and the diverse habitats it supports are important, as are spaces where humans can pause and contemplate the natural world. These are images of some of my favorite painting spots in the Greater Vancouver Region, which occupies the unceded shared traditional territories of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
